Netrunner by Richard Garfield is basically " Neuromancer: the card game". Many of my generation. .. suspect the Age of Greed and Waste to be. .. crudely overdrawn. Stevens, Tyler. ""Sinister fruitiness": 'Neuromancer,' Internet sexuality and the Turing test." Gibson was given only a year to complete his first novel, and had second thoughts several times throughout the process, most especially after he saw the film Blade Runner and realized that cyberpunk was already in existence.

He lists sixteen things therein you might glean if you were wholly ignorant of computer hacking, none of which offer any significant advantage over common sense; tips along the lines of, “Passwords can be really obvious, or hard to remember text strings.” Townsend perhaps overlooks tokens of “realism” sprinkled throughout the text: for example, GURPS Cyberpunk mentions real-world hacker hangouts such as Altgers and tchh, albeit without explaining how such systems might practically be accessed.

But across the whole planet only a few dozen cities actually manage to pull off this feat and continue as places where people can live. Other major writers that began publishing during the golden age included Isaac Asimov and Ray Bradbury. I don’t think Lavgine has a very good understanding of the community, in particular as she seems to think that the Nebulas and the PKD are voted on by fans, but it is good to see an academic study come out of the ivory tower and see how the works being studied have worked in the wild.
